　　　　　　　　　　　　《WAIKAREMOANA NAKED》

　　Waikaremoana is a beautiful fresh-water lake in the heart of the Urewera Forest in New Zealand's North Island. The scenery of Waikaremoana is absolutely superb and tramping the Waikaremoana Great Walk in the company of naturist friends was an unforgettable adventure.

　　I was quite excited when Graham invited me to join a party of naturist trampers on the "Waikaremoana Great Walk". This 46 kilometre tramping track follows the shore of the lake for most of its length and usually takes four to five days to walk. There are well-appointed huts and campsites at the end of each day's tramp. Graham's plan was to do the whole circuit in two and a half days, staying overnight at every second campsite.

　　The first day's walk involved a climb along the crest of the Panekiri Range, a prominent fault scarp dominating the southern shore of the lake. This almost vertical cliff drops 360 metres to the blue waters of the lake which are surrounded by lush native forest. The view from the top of Panekiri Bluff is so spectacular it almost takes one's breath away. Panekiri Hut, perched on the highest point of the range, is where most people spend their first night. Our party of nude trampers paused here for a snack and photo session before moving on. During our circumnavigation of Waikaremoana we passed several parties of clothed trampers coming the other way. All were obviously surprised to encounter a group of people carrying tramping packs but wearing only boots and sunhats.

　　Some thought it was a great joke, but others were jealous of our comfortable clothes-free "attire". We greeted everyone with a cheery,"Hello", as if it was the most natural thing in the world to be tramping in the nude (which it is). Reactions included "Good on ya". "Let me see if your bums are brown", "Don't the pack straps rub?" and "Can I take your photo?" The answer to this last question was, of course, "Yes". I overheard a German tourist say, "So they do that here, too?" We did not hear a single negative comment from any of the people we met, which confirmed our view that nudity is not a problem these days - at least among the outdoor types one might meet in the hills.

　　Luckily the weather remained fine while we continued our trip and we completed the walk in two and a half days as planned. Waikaremoana, a beautiful, unspoiled lake surrounded by rugged hills clothed in lush native forest, is one of the finest walks in New Zealand and tramping nude is certainly the most enjoyable and comfortable way to enjoy the great outdoors. The whole experience was so enjoyable that we are planning more nude tramping trips in the near future.
